It is Myanmar's only zoo. And do you know that it used to be called "Victoria Garden"? Actually, Yangon zoo can be a nice zoo, if it had been cleaner. The big trees and the atmosphere is perfect for a zoo. The only drawback is the cleanliness. I don't know it has become cleaner or not. The last time I went there is about 6 years ago. K3500 and K5000 respectively for the final day.

It is good to have such tournaments. Otherwise the boxers will have very little income. Boxing is interested by many people in Myanmar. But the taurnaments are rare. I mean a big tournament like this one. In Thailand, there are boxing matches everyweeks and those are shown live on TV. It seems like its a very good business here. Been trekking for 5 days to villages where it’s like time stopped long, long ago.”

This reminded me on a short lecture i heard by John Thakara yesterday on development here in the Tropical Museum in Amsterdam. He questioned all our assumptions about what undeveloped versus developed socieites are.

We often think:Development = growth and productivity, development = infrastructure and that well-being = owning shit. So called “undeveloped countries” often have far higher social capital, like my father’s experience in the lost villages of Myanmar. Development often destroys social capital. The challenge is how can we address the loss of social capital in Western indust./informationized societies using all the creativity and longing at our disposal.

Culture Tips in Myanmar

The following article describes a few tips to remember when travelling in Myanmar. Thanks to Nature Dream.

Politesse: In traditional countries like Myanmar, many people have had little to do with visitors from more industrialized places. To respect sensitivities, so as not to cause offence a few tips.

Feet: Remember to take off your shoes and socks before you enter a temple, pagoda or as aguest in a private house. Follow the foot rule- keep your feet on the ground.Keep them off the tables and chairs and try not to wave them around. Also try to remember not to point your feet directly at anybody and try to walk around a person rather than step over them. As a sign of respect, the Myanmar will also try to avoid steeping on a monk's shadow.

Hands: As in most Asin countries try to remember to use your right hand when giving and receiving. Better still, the most gracious way to give and receive, is to use both hands.

Names: People in Myanmar place an honorific in front of names to show respect for age or position.

For Male

For Female

Adult

U (Mr.)

Daw (Mrs.)

Younger person

Ko

Ma

Teacher/Boss

Saya

Sayama

To monk

Sayadaw/Kodaw

Sayalay

Eating: Eating in Myanmar home people generally eat around a low table, sitting on mats on the floor, In restaurants, more conventional to Westerners tables and chairs are used. Myanmar food is generally eaten with the fingers. Western visitors are probably more comfortable with spoon and fork, and this is perfectly acceptable.

Clothing: Light cotton clothing is most appropriate especially for the long hot summer months. No shorts, mini's or sleeveless shirts when visiting religious sites. While the Myanmar may make no demands, it is a mark of respect to dress modestly and neatly.

Shopping: Note that you are not allowed to export antiques or religious items.

Watch the sun: In the plains around Bagan, the sun is ferocious and can be tiring. Follow the lead of the Myanmar and visit in the early morning and later in the afternoon, resting in your hotel in the heat of the day. Don't forget to drink plenty of water, use sunscreen and bring a hat. Or buy a Myanmar paper umbrella. Why do you think the Myanmar cover their faces witn Tha-Nat-Kha.

Water: Don't drink the tap water. Make sure your water is boiled, or better, buy it bottled. Watch the ice cubes.

Yangon Transportation

The Great Shwedagon Paya

This travel blog is quite nice. It has no specific name so I don't know what to call it. I found an article about Myanmar there and the following is an excerpt from the article about Shwedagon Paya. If you want to read the full version, click here.

The Shwedagon Paya is much more than just another temple. It is the cultural and religious heart of Myamar. Built on a small hill in central Yangon (Rangoon) the great golden dome rises almost 100m and dominates the city skyline. Rudyard Kipling was moved to call it “a golden mystery”.

Getting there is easy, as the Shwedagon is just north of central Yangon and is easily the most popular tourist attraction in the city. Every taxi and motor rickshaw driver knows the way. The $5 entrance fee includes the use of a lift to the main floor of the complex, but there’s nothing to stop you following the footsteps of Buddhist worshippers and climbing the steps up Singuuttara Hill to the summit. You have four covered walkways to choose from in addition to lifts at the northern and southern entrances.

Sunrise and sunset are the best times to visit Shwedagon, but any time you go, a visit is sure to leave memories which last a lifetime. As English visitor Ralph Fitch wrote in 1586:

“It is called Dogonne, and is of a wonderful bignesse, and all gilded from the foot to the toppe….it is the fairest place, as I suppose, that is in the world.”

BY: David McGarry - For more interesting articles on Myanmar, Please see ExploreMyanmar

Photos coutesy of H.S de Jong

What Sarah thinks about Yangon, Myanmar

The below article is from Sarah's blog. The aircraft, which can carry 108 passengers and will operate on the Nyaung-U, Mandalay and Heho routes, was acquired from a Singapore company. It brings Air Bagan’s fleet to four. The airline, launched last November, also operates two ATR-42s and an ATR-72.

DOMESTIC carrier Air Bagan has launched a new service to Kawthaung in a move which will assist the growth of tourism in the Myeik Archipelago.

The airline added the service late last month to its three-weekly flights to Myeik. The flights leave Yangon at 6am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and arrive in Kawthaung at 8.10.

The airline’s assistant manager of sales and marketing, Daw Pwint Mar Han, said it had introduced the service because of the archipelago’s huge potential as a tourist destination.

“The Myeik Archipelago’s unspoiled beauty is a treasure for our tourism industry. In the past, tour operators had difficulties promoting it as there were no scheduled flights,” she said.

“The area isn’t visited by many tourists but we felt it was worth the investment to launch the service before it becomes more popular.”

The regular flights to Kawthaung have been welcomed by travel industry operators in the town, the entry point for many tourists who make a short boat trip from Ranong in neighbouring Thailand.

The chairman of the Tourism Myanmar Co-operative Ltd., which operates the Mergui Princess liveaboard vessel, U Aye Min Oo, said easy access to the region was crucial for its development as a new destination.

“When we started our business, the biggest obstacle was accessibility, and we initially relied on tourists taking daily flights from Bangkok to Ranong,” he said. The regular flights from Yangon, coupled with tourist arrivals from Ranong, would be a big boost for the travel industry in the region.

The director of products of the Myanmar Andaman Resort on Fork Island, U Khin Zaw, agreed that regular flights were essential to promote tourism in the archipelago.

“It can only be called a tourist destination if there are regular flights, good ground transportation and accommodation,” said U Khin Zaw, who is also the chairman of the Union of Myanmar Travel Association.

“Our tour programs would be much easier to operate now, as the resort is closer to Kawthaung than Myeik.”

However, U Khin Zaw said it would be more convenient if there were direct flights to Kawthaung from Yangon.

“The best situation would be flights to Kawthaung without any stopovers, which would mean a shorter flying time and lower airfares. But it will happen when tourist numbers increase,” he said.

The above news article appeared in Myanmar Times: Myanmar's first international weekly

Myanmar Traditional Boxing

I used to watch Myanmar Traditional boxing matches on TV. At that time, Myawady Television broadcasted the boxing matches weekly. Myanmar Traditional boxing matches are very entertaining and exiting to watch. The boxers really box, you know. You'll see after you watch.

Thanks to Arloo

Myanmar Photolog

Streets of Mandalay

Shwedagon

Shwedagon-2

Cyrstal clear water at Ngapali

Fisherman

Photos courtesy of Robert
<div style="clear: both; One cannot swim in the sea along the beach in front of the Yuzana Hotel because there are stone reefs and it is a bit dangerous. Half of Ngwe Hsaung Beach is rocky reef and half is sandy beach. You can swim in the sea in front of the high-class hotels because there are not reefs. But, beach at the side of local hotels are full of reefs. Although it is not easy to swim, there are a lot of fish near the reefs. Even in the 50 cm deep water where one can prop his legs, there are numerous multi-coloured tropical fishes. It is in some way enjoyable to see them. So technically they are marionettes. They became very popular in the 18th, century, more so than human performers, and they also became very powerful at the King’s Royal court.

The reason for their power and popularity is based on the logic of the Asian mind. Since they are just wooden dolls, what they say cannot be taken offense by anyone: even the King. It does not matter that behind the screen there is a man talking on behalf of the puppets, for the criteria of the highest talent in puppetry is that the small wooden dolls must be completely life-like. This means that the puppeteers have mastered their art to such a degree that the dolls they manipulate with strings move and dance like humans. Since in these movements they are so much like humans, what they say is also supposed to have come from their painted lips.

This logic was very useful: it allowed the puppets to speak freely to the King what his Ministers do not dare say. Thus a great many wrongs had been righted, and many lives saved through the speech of the puppets. It was also the privilege of the Minister of Theater that he can invite the King or Prince to a puppet show in an emergency.

For example, one cruel queen locked a young princess in a big teak trunk as they were playing hide and seek. The queen was of common birth so she could not be chief queen as long as this princess lives, for she is of full Royal blood and destined to become the Chief Queen as soon as she was old enough. At that time she was only fifteen.

When the Minister of Theater heard of this, he hurriedly arranged a puppet play to relay the news, and invited the Crown Prince to watch. As soon as the Crown Prince realized the story behind the play, he hurried to save the princess. She was still alive, testimony to how quickly the play was arranged and performed. The Crown Prince later overthrew his brother the King and executed the commoner Queen.

At that time, human performers acting the part of a king were not allowed to wear the King’s costume. Only by holding a sword in his hand could the dancer let the audience know he was supposed to be the king in the play. However, for puppets, it was a different matter altogether, for they could be dressed in all full regalia, with gorgeous silks and gold. Puppet plays could also be performed on a stage, whereas the humans dance on the ground. So puppetry was known as the High Theater and the human as Low Theater. This made the puppeteers look down so much on the humans. Not only that, but human performers must dance as much like a puppet as they can, and this is still the criteria of Myanmar choreography. For this reason, many famous dancers of the past were taught to dance by following the moves of a puppet.

It was not only at court that the puppets served the people. In the countryside, too, they were the media when there were no newspapers as yet. Puppet troupes travel from town to town, and the puppeteers gather information and gossip from many places, as well as from the capital city. They will relay the news through the speeches of the comedian puppets, so that the countrypeople in remote villages also hear about city life and the latest scandals.

The comedian puppet handlers were the most important members of the troupe, and they impromptu jokes, songs and long poetic speeches while they were on stage. The village people attended these performances diligently, for this was a way of getting news as well as for learning about history and literature.

The leading roles in Myanmar theater are the Prince and Princess. Indeed, actors and actresses for movies are also called Prince (Mintha) and Princess (Minthamee). The two leading puppets are always gorgeously dressed with silks and jewels. They also have real hair implanted in the wooden skulls. Their hair is combed out, washed and oiled by not the handlers, but the speakers. The two dancing puppets are the leading roles, so they are important enough to have a man each speaking or singing for them. They sit behind the screen while the puppeteer is busy handling the strings. The speakers give the final, important touch of life and personality to the puppets, so they are the owners, not the puppeteers.

Prince and Princess

Each puppet is made with especially crafted joints to enable them to play their roles to perfection. All puppets must have complete sexual organs carved in, although not in detail. When the troupe travels, the puppets are kept in two huge trunks. Some puppets are enemies to each other, for example the tiger and elephant, or the two ogres, so they must be stored separately. Even on stage they must be hung up at either side of the stage. There should be at least 28 puppets in each troupe, but many have a lot more.

In this present age when tourism is important, and visitors like to see the culture of the country , it is fortunate that there are many puppet shows around to amuse them. Now puppets are only for entertainment, but long long ago they helped in the rule of the nation.

Tags: myanmar, yangon, myanmar puppets, puppets, marionettes, tourism

Yangon Airport

This is the scaled model of extension of Yangon International Air Port, which is a part of preparation for ASEAN Summit to be held late next year. At night time Chinatown comes alive with its pungent aromas and delicious streetfood.

Travel Tips for Myanmar

AIRPORT TAX
Any passengers departing Myanmar on international flights will need to pay a departure tax of US$ 10.00 per person.

CLIMATE & WEATHER
Myanmar has three seasons. *Cool Season - October through February with average temperatures 20-24 C *Hot Season - March through May with average temperatures 30-35 C *Wet Season - June through September with average temperatures 25-30 C The ideal time to visit Myanmar is during the cool season.
